From The UK Pet Food Perspective.
Choosing your pets food is a daunting experience as their are so many options! Below we will discuss the most important things to remeber when looking. Most of the pet food which is on the high street / pet shops will be safe for your pet however if you are worried check the formulation with your vet.
Side note: Your vets might be paid to endorse their own brands or pet food partnerships. So ask them to recommend several.
Make sure to weigh your pet so you know how much to feed according to guidelines.
1. A Balanced Diet Means No Additives
Ensure that the pet food you choose provides a balanced diet without unnecessary additives. In the UK if the pet food bag states "complete balanced diet" you can rest easy. Avoid foods which say "complementary" as these are missing vitals vitamins and minerals and should be used only as treats. Therefore supplements can often be a waste of money if the food already contains all the essential nutrients your pet needs. Always check with your vet before introducing new supplements to your pets diets to check for inbalancs.

2. Understand the Ingredients
Don't be misled by marketing jargon. If a bag states chicken and rice there actually does not have to have good quality chicken only a small percent ot chicken will be legal to sell it. So always turn the bag over and read the ingredient list to know exactly what is in the food and what percentages. Avoid diets which are vegan and vegetarian as cats and dogs require protein. Look for high-quality ingredients that contribute to your pet's health.
Top Tip: if you don't understand the ingredients list it is not a good food!

3. Watch Out for High Carbohydrates and Sugars
Foods that are high in carbohydrates and sugars can lead to dental disease and other health issues. This is because the food become stuck around the gums and teeth and if you do not clean your pets teeth it will cause plaque build up leading to inflammation and chronic disease. Many pet foods have grain fillers in to bulk up the product but provide little nutrition. Opt for pet foods that prioritise protein and healthy fats and natural fibres from vegetables over fillers.
